Applicants sitting for the California Bar Examination do not know which of the 17 subjects listed above will in fact be tested on the essay portion of the examination. In recent years, it has been increasingly common for the exam to feature one or more "crossover" questions, which tests applicants in multiple subjects. Examples of past tested essays with sample answers are available on the California State Bar website.
This was after taking my only other bar exam inand passing it in IN, right after graduating from law school. Both had essays which is all IN had back in The MBE scared the crap out of me more than the essays or the MPT, since I had passed a bar exam which was solely comprised of essay questions.
So my prep consisted of primarily prepping for the MBE; reading through only one MPT question and sample answer, like the few days leading up to the bar; and reading through old TN bar exam essays.
Prepping for the MBE was like going back to law school all over again, and actually learning something this time I made outlines for each MBE topic and for each TN topic and I started with really long outlines, and as I learned the material, I made shorter outlines with more abbreviations.
I also made flash cards for some of the Con Law, Crim. Law and Procedure and Torts terms - for me, mnemonics was the key to learning these terms. Following the exam, I felt the MBE was tremendously easier than I had expected, thanks to my prep work and I was able to finish each session before time was called and I was able to review my work too.
I took longer than anyone else on the MPT, which freaked me out a bit, but the question had so many issues to discuss.
The TN essay questions were okay, and I think I really nailed the family law one which covered best interests of the child in regards to child custody.
But I tanked the one on the governor wanting to have his church members on the parole advisory board but I did write something down for each question, which is key. I also mixed up the criminal law question by mixing up 2 different crimes and their elements, but I discussed each element in my essay.
All this is to say that you can pass this exam - I did after being out of law school for over 14 years. I hope some of this helped. The Tennessee bar exam takes two days and consists of the Tennessee Essays, the Multistate Performance Test (“MPT”), and the Multistate Bar Exam (“MBE”).
